Der Begriff Kreativität geht auf das lateinische Wort creare zurück, was so viel bedeutet wie „etwas neu schöpfen, etwas erfinden, etwas erzeugen, herstellen“, aber auch die Nebenbedeutung von „auswählen“ hat. Der Begriff enthält als weitere Wurzel das lateinische "crescere", das "geschehen und wachsen" bedeutet. Diese Doppelgesichtigkeit der Kreativität zwischen aktiven Tun und passivem Geschehen-Lassen findet sich auch in modernen Kreativitätskonzepten (s. Csikszentmihalyi 1996, Holm-Hadulla 2010).
